The Norwood Kids Foundation Inc.

Enrollment

The NK Foundation is a nonprofit public benefit organization designed to bolster the self-esteem of disadvantaged and at-risk youth through participation in performing arts. The Foundation is highly effective in transforming the lives of youth, because unlike other arts-driven organizations, it utilizes the celebrity status of its founders, the appeal of dance, drill team, vocal training, dramatic coaching, production and other celebrity involvement to attract youth to the program. Once enrolled, cultivation of proficiency in the performing arts is not the organization's only endeavor. Participants are required to undergo a variety of academic, self-awareness and self-improvement related workshops, designed to speak directly to issues relating to them.

Members of The NK Performing Arts Mainline Community must have a minimum grade point average of 2.0 to enroll and 2.5 to perform at events, Mainline participants are required to volunteer 3 hours a month to a civic or social organization. Though the programs are free, parental participation is required, reaffirming the idea that parents hold the ultimate responsibility in shaping the future of their children. "Our goal is to improve the quality of life for children who don't have access to the resources that will help them to journey responsibly to adulthood," says Sonja Norwood. "We wanted to focus on youth ages eight to eighteen and build their self-esteem, enhance learning, increase exposure to other cultures and ideas and encourage the development of independent thinking and problem-solving skills."

Pilot programs and tutoring program participants are not required to have a grade point average. Pilot programs are designed to increase GPAs gradually. Focus is geared to provide participants with activities during hours most vulnerable to negative activities.
